Ronald George Gleave

With regret his family announce the death at the age of 94 of Ronald George Gleave, known affectionately as Ginge, died at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant on 19th September 2017.

Born to Alice and Charles on 5th January 1923 in Liverpool, he resided in Louisa Street Anfield then Murcote Road Knotty Ash with his siblings Nellie, Betty and Ernie, attending Finch Hall school where he was boys secretary. He was a talented footballer playing outside right for Liverpool Schoolboys, winning a runners up medal with them in a final at Anfield Road. He was naturally a lifelong Liverpool FC fan. During the Second World War he joined the Royal Navy and served aboard the HMT Regal an anti-submarine trawler as the radio operator and based mainly at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands. It was on one of the Regal’s tours to Milford Haven that he met his future wife Esther Setterfield at one of the Masonic Hall’s dance evenings and they married in Liverpool on 18th October 1947 where he worked for the Hoover company.

Moving back to Milford Haven he worked for Wards Yard as a ship breaker then the majority of his working life for P.O. Telephones as a cable jointer retiring as an inspector in the mid-eighties. He enjoyed an active retirement which included part time work for the Haverfordwest Peugeot dealership as a store-man/ driver and enjoyed indoor bowls with friends.

In 1998 Ginge and Esther moved to Llanharan to be closer to their 3 grandsons. The last few years have been blighted with Alzheimer’s which eventually took him. Esther and Ginge were due to celebrate their 70th wedding within the next month. He is mourned by his wife Esther, son Jeremy, daughter-in-law Jayne, grandsons Zachary, Harrison and Tobias and his brother Ernie and extended families.

Funeral Information

His funeral will be held at Coychurch Crematorium, Bridgend at 3.15pm on Thursday 5th October 2017
